Newspaper Digitization to Expand in 2011-2012

I'm excited to announce that we will be adding lots of new content to the North Carolina Newspapers project in the coming year. Over 100 reels of microfilm will be digitized and published online, providing an unprecedented level of access to some our state's most important primary sources. After receiving nominations from libraries across North Carolina, we selected a range of titles that represent the broad geographic and cultural diversity of our state, and span more than a century of North Carolina history. Visit the page Newspapers Selected for Digitization, 2011-2012 for a full list of titles. The first papers will appear online later this fall, with the majority coming throughout 2012. Stay tuned to this blog for updates and more information.

Nick,

Other than the WATCHMAN, which NC newspapers, that cover since 1860 are digitized and available online? I admire and appreciate so much all of your work. Thanks for your help.

The State Archives newspaper digitization project [http://www.archives.ncdcr.gov/newspaper/index.html] is the only other non-commercial site I'm aware of for historic North Carolina papers. There are several site where historic papers are available for a fee. Two that I know of are Newspaper Archive (Heritage Microfilm) and America's Historical Newspapers (Readex). Both have several North Carolina titles. I'd suggest checking with your local library -- they may have subscriptions to these databases and will probably know of others.

Here at UNCG, we're about to add The Greensborough Patriot, 1826-1922. We're hoping to have them available by the summer of 2012.
